보통 남자는 서른이 되면 자기 생에 대하여 그 어떤 뜻을 세우게 됩니다. 저도 그랬던 것 같습니다. 예를 들면 과연 이 직장을 계속 다녀야 하는지, 하는 것을 계속해야 하는지를 생각한다는 것이지요. 이렇게 ‘서른 살’로 계산한 것은 일의 종착, 즉 한계를 육십으로 보았기 때문입니다. 지금은 100세 인생이라 옛날과 다릅니다. 이스라엘 민족을 출애굽 시키는 하나님의 위대한 구원역사에 크게 쓰임 받았던 모세의 결단 시기는 80이었습니다. 80은 결코 빠른 나이가 아닙니다. 특히 당시에는 더욱 그랬습니다. 그의 첫 40년은 모친 품과 바로의 궁에서 교육을 받으며 자랐던 시기이었습니다. 그러다가 나이 사십이 되었을 때 자기 민족을 위해 무언가 해야 하겠다고 생각한 그는 결국 애굽 사람 하나 몰래 죽이는 결를 만들어 버렸습니다. 그래서 바로에게 쫓기는 몸이 되었고, 피난 생활을 하게 되었습니다. 그 피난 생활이 미디안 광야에서 양치는 시간이었습니다. 자기 백성을 구원해보겠다고 세웠던 그 귀한 뜻은 점점 더 잊혔고, 이렇게 80이라는 노년을 맞이하였습니다. 과거 이야기를 종종 하는 사람이 되어 버린 것입니다.
When a man turns thirty, he usually has a certain idea of what he wants to do with his life. I think I did, for example, thinking about whether I should stay in this job, whether I should keep doing what I'm doing. I counted it as "thirty" because I saw the end of my work, the limit, as sixty. It's not like that now, because I'm living to be 100. Moses, who was instrumental in God's great deliverance of the Israelites, was 80 when he made his decision. The first 40 years of his life were spent in his mother's womb and in Pharaoh's court, being educated. Then, when he was in his forties, he decided he had to do something for his people, and he ended up secretly killing an Egyptian. He was hunted down by Pharaoh and forced to take refuge in the wilderness of Midian, where he shepherded sheep. His original intention to save his people was increasingly forgotten, and he lived to the ripe old age of 80. He became a man who often spoke of his past.
하지만 하나님께서는 모세의 인생을 이렇게 마치도록 버려두지는 않으셨다는 것입니다. 뜻을 세우고 어쩌고 하기에는 이미 늦은 나이, 남아 있는 힘도 없는 불가능하다고 여겨졌던 그때에 하나님이 모세를 찾아오셨다는 것입니다. 그래서 하나님의 부르신 사명으로 팔십부터 비로소 본격적인 사역을 펼쳐나가게 된 것인데, 그러면 그에게 무엇이 있었을까요? 이번 고난 주간 특별새벽기도회 첫날 이것을 나누면서 우리의 현주소도 돌아보기를 원합니다. 첫째가 ‘거룩하신 하나님을 만난 사람’이 되었다는 것입니다. 다른 말로 표현하면, 거룩하신 하나님의 존 전으로 부르심을 받은 체험을 하였다는 것입니다. 1절에서 6절을 봅니다. “모세가 그 장인 미디안 제사장 이드로의 양무리를 치더니, 그 무리를 광야 서편으로 인도하여 하나님의 산 호렙에 이르매, 여호와의 사자가 떨기나무 불꽃 가운데서 그에게 나타나시니라. 그가 보니 떨기나무에 불이 붙었으나 사라지지 아니하는지라. 이에 가로되 내가 돌이켜 가서 이 큰 광경을 보리라. 떨기나무가 어찌하여 타지 아니하는 고 하는 동시에, 여호와께서 그가 보려고 돌이켜 오는 것을 보신지라. 하나님이 떨기나무 가운데서 그를 불러 가라사대, 모세야 모세야 하시매 그가 가로되 내가 여기 있나이다. 하나님이 가라사대 이리로 가까이하지 말라. 너의 선 곳은 거룩한 땅이니, 네 발에서 신을 벗으라. 또 이르시되 나는 네 조상의 하나님이니 아브라함의 하나님, 이삭의 하나님, 야곱의 하나님이니라. 모세가 하나님 뵈옵기를 두려워하여 얼굴을 가리우매”
But God didn't let Moses' life end this way; God came to him at a time when it was too late for him to make up his mind and do anything about it, when he had no strength left, when it seemed impossible, and so he didn't begin to fulfill the mission to which God had called him until he was in his eighties, so what was in store for him then? As we share this on the first day of this special New Year's Eve prayer service for this week of suffering, I want us to reflect on where we are as well. The first is that he became a "man who encountered the holy God," or in other words, he had an experience that called him into the presence of the holy God. Look at verses 1 through 6. "And Moses took the flock of Jethro the priest of Midian, his father-in-law, and led them westward in the wilderness, unto Horeb, the mountain of God: and the messenger of the LORD appeared unto him in the midst of the flame of the quaking tree; and he looked, and behold, the quaking tree was kindled, and was not consumed. And he said, I will turn and see this great sight: and it came to pass, that the LORD saw him turn to see, even as he said, Why is the quaking tree not consumed? And God called unto him out of the bush, and said unto him, Moses, Moses: and he said, Here I am. And God said unto him, Draw not nigh unto this place. And he said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob: and Moses hid his face for fear that he should see God."
도망자가 되어 버린 지극히 평범한 그의 삶이고, 처가 집 더부살이로 하루하루 양을 치는 삶을 사는 모세를 불러내기 위한 특별 기획을 하나님이 하였다는 것입니다. 그 장소가 어디입니까? “하나님의 산 호렙”, 여러분, “호렙산”은 “시내산”의 또 다른 이름으로 “하나님의 산”이라는 수식어가 첨가되어 있습니다. 무엇을 말합니까? 나중에 모세가 이스라엘 백성과 함께 출애굽 한 후, 다시 이 산에 돌아와서 바로 여기서 십계명을 받았기에 “하나님의 산”이라는 수식어가 붙었습니다. 무엇으로 불렀습니까? 그 호렙산에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 한 “떨기나무”, 이 나무로 불렀습니다. 이 나무에 하나님이 직접 불을 붙이셨던 것입니다. 그런데 신기한 것은 불이 붙었는데, 타지 않은 것입니다. 날씨가 덥기에 종종 나무에 불이 붙을 수 있겠죠? 그런데 타지 않은 이 모습을 본 모세, 즉 모세의 호기심을 자극하였던 것입니다. 이것이 너무 신기한 모세가, 이것을 더 자세히 보려고 하나님 앞으로 가까이 왔던 것이고, 하나님도 그것을 보고 있었다는 것이고, 바로 그 떨기나무 사이에 “여호와의 사자”가 기다리고 계셨다는 것입니다.
The idea is that God had a special plan to call Moses out of his life of being a fugitive, a runaway, and living a life where his wife was a housekeeper and he was herding sheep every day. Where is that place? "Horeb, the mountain of God", folks, "Horeb" is another name for "Mount Sinai" with the added modifier "the mountain of God". Later on, after Moses exited with the Israelites, he came back to this mountain again and received the Ten Commandments right here, hence the modifier "mountain of God". What was it called? It was called a "quaking tree," a tree that was common on Mount Horeb, and God himself had lit it on fire, and what's interesting is that when it caught fire, it didn't burn, which can happen sometimes when the weather is hot, right? This piqued the curiosity of Moses, or Moses, who came closer to God to get a better look at it, and God was looking at it, too, and there was a "messenger of the LORD" waiting among the trees of the bush.
가까이 다가오고 있는 모세에게 하나님의 말씀이 뭐라 하였습니까? “이리로 가까이하지 말라 너의 선 곳은 거룩한 땅이니 네 발에서 신을 벗으라”, 이 의미가 무엇이에요? 하나님이 주신 상기, 즉 notice, 사람이 하나님 앞에 서게 될 때 제일 먼저 자각해야 할 바를 말씀하신 것입니다. 왜? 일까요? 사람은 죄로 말미암아 악하고 더러운 존재이기에 반면에 하나님은 선하고 거룩하신 존재이시기에 그렇습니다. 그러기에 모세가 그 신을 벗는다는 것은, 결국 그가 거룩하신 하나님을 뵈옵기 위해서 먼저 자신의 더러움을 벗어버리는 자세가 필요함을 보여주는 것입니다. 이렇게 평생 처음으로 하나님의 부르심을 받은 모세가 되었고, 하나님의 음성을 듣고 있습니다. 하나님의 얼굴 뵈옵기를 두려워하는 모세, 소명 받는 것도 두렵지만, 하나님 앞에 자신이 서 있다는 것도 두렵기 그지없는 자신을 발견한 것입니다. 사랑하는 여러분, 참 하나님을 진짜로 만나게 되면 그 첫 순간에 절실히 느끼는 것이 두려움입니다. 이사야 선지자도 하나님을 뵙게 된 첫 순간에 “화로다 나여 망하게 되었도다 나는 입술이 부정한 사람이요 입술이 부정한 백성 중에 거하면서 만군의 하나님 여호와이신 왕을 뵈었음이로다”라고 하였습니다. 하나님을 만나는 것은 너무나 중요한 것입니다.
What did God say to Moses, who was approaching, "Come no nearer, for the place where you stand is holy ground; take off your gods from your feet." What does this mean? It's a reminder, a notice from God, the first thing a person should be aware of when they stand before God. Why? Because man is evil and dirty because of sin, whereas God is good and holy, and so Moses' taking off his clothes shows that in order for him to see God, who is holy, he needs to be willing to take off his own dirt. And so, for the first time in his life, Moses is called by God, and he hears God's voice. Moses, who is afraid to see God's face, finds himself not only afraid to be called, but also afraid to stand before God. Beloved, when you really encounter the true God, fear is what you feel in those first moments. The prophet Isaiah, in his first moments of seeing God, said, "Woe is me, for I am destroyed; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell among a people of unclean lips, and I have seen the King, the Lord, the God of hosts." It is so important to see God.
두 번째로 하나님의 사명으로 인생의 바른 목표를 세울 수 있었다는 것입니다. 부르심을 받은 자에게 나타나는 특징은 자기 생에 주어진 임무가 무엇인지를 바로 알아가는 것입니다. 오늘 본문 7~10절에서 하나님을 만난 모세는 주어진 임무에 대해 묻게 됩니다. “여호와께서 가라사대, 내가 애굽에 있는 내 백성의 고통을 정녕히 보고, 그들이 그 간역자로 인하여 부르짖음을 듣고, 그 우고를 알고, 내가 내려와서 그들을 애굽인의 손에서 건져내고, 그들을 그 땅에서 인도하여 아름답고 광대한 땅, 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅 곧 가나안 족속, 헷 족속, 아모리 족속, 브리스 족속, 히위 족속, 여부스 족속의 지방에 이르려 하노라. 이제 이스라엘 자손의 부르짖음이 내게 달하고, 애굽 사람이 그들을 괴롭게 하는 학대도 내가 보았으니, 이제 내가 너를 바로에게 보내어, 너로 내 백성 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 인도하여 내게 하리라” 하나님의 반복이 무엇입니까? “내가 보고 내가 듣고 내가 내려와서 내가 건져내고 내가 인도해 들이겠다”라는 말씀입니다. 이것은 결국 모세가 하는 것이 아니라 “내가” 즉 하나님 자신께서 하신다는 강조입니다. 이 강조가 10절에 “이제 내가 너를 보내어 너로 인도하여 내게 하리라”라는 결론입니다.
The second is that God's mission allowed him to set the right goals for his life. A characteristic of the called is to know right away what the task of his life is. In verses 7-10 of our text, Moses, upon meeting God, asks about the task he has been given. "Thus says the LORD, I have seen the affliction of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their mistress, and I have known their distress, and I will come down and deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and I will bring them up out of the land, to a land beautiful and spacious, a land flowing with milk and honey, the land of the Canaanites, the Hivites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. Now the cry of the children of Israel has reached me, and I have seen the abuse with which the Egyptians afflicted them: now will I send you to Pharaoh, and you shall bring my people the children of Israel out of Egypt, and they shall come to me." What is God's repetition? "I have seen, and I have heard, and I will come down, and I will deliver, and I will bring them in." This is the emphasis, after all, that it is not Moses who is doing it, but "I," God himself, who is doing it. This emphasis is concluded in verse 10: "Now will I send you, and you shall bring them in, and they shall come to me".
이것은 오로지 하나님 당신께 속한, 순전한 하나님의 일을 이제부터 모세를 통하여 이루게 하시겠다는 말씀입니다. 중요한 것은 이런 일에는 전혀 상관없이 팔십 년의 세월을 보냈던 그에게 이 말씀을 하셨다는 것입니다. 청장년기 40년의 세월을 미디안 광야에서 보낸 그에게 이 말씀을 하셨다는 것이고 전혀 다른 인생의 방향을 설정해주셨다는 것입니다. 그것이 자기 민족 전체를 구원해내는 엄청난 사명을 위하여 자신의 남은 모든 생을 바치는 것이고, 그것을 어떻게 수행해야 하는지 가르쳐주신 것입니다. 11~14절입니다. “모세가 하나님께 고하되, 내가 누구관대 바로에게 가며 이스라엘 자손을 애굽에서 인도하여 내리이까. 하나님이 가라사대, 내가 정녕 너와 함께 있으리라. 네가 백성을 애굽에서 인도하여 낸 후에, 너희가 이 산에서 하나님을 섬기리니, 이것이 내가 너를 보낸 증거니라. 모세가 하나님께 고하되, 내가 이스라엘 자손에게 가서 이르기를, 너희 조상의 하나님이 나를 너희에게 보내셨다 하면, 그들이 내게 묻기를 그의 이름이 무엇이냐 하리니, 내가 무엇이라고 그들에게 말하리이까? 하나님이 모세에게 이르시되, 나는 스스로 있는 자니라. 또 이르시되, 너는 이스라엘 자손에게 이같이 이르기를, 스스로 있는 자가 나를 너희에게 보내셨다 하라”
This is God saying that from now on He is going to accomplish through Moses a work that belongs to Him alone, a work that is purely God's. What's important is that He says this to a man who had spent eighty years of his life completely unconnected to any of this. He said this to a man who had spent 40 years of his young adult life in the wilderness of Midian, and He set him on a completely different course for his life: to dedicate the rest of his life to the enormous task of redeeming his entire people, and He taught him how to do it. Verses 11-14. "And Moses said unto God, Whom shall I go unto Pharaoh, to bring the children of Israel up out of Egypt; and God said unto him, Surely I will be with thee. And it shall come to pass, after thou hast brought the people out of Egypt, that ye shall serve God in this mountain: this is the proof that I have sent thee. And Moses said unto God, If I go unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, The God of thy fathers hath sent me unto thee; and they shall ask me, What is his name, and what shall I say unto them? And God said unto Moses, I am a God of my own: and he said unto him, Thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, The God of my own hath sent me unto you.“
아무리 생각해도 그처럼 엄청난 일을 해낼 능력이 자기에게 있는 것 같지가 않다고 생각한 그가 “내가 누구관대”라고 말합니다. 이 의미는 ‘나같이 이미 나이 늙고 힘없는 사람이 어떻게 그런 큰일을 할 수 있겠느냐’라는 말이고, ‘누가 나 같은 사람 말을 듣고 따라주겠느냐’라는 말입니다. 한마디로 하나님께 반문한 것입니다. 그런 그에게 하나님의 대답은 “스스로 계신 자가 너를 보내었다는 사실을 기억하라”라는 사실입니다. 이 의미가 무엇일까요? 여러분, 이 의미는 엄청난 의미입니다. ‘당신의 존재를 다른 그 어떤 존재에도 의존하지 아니하시는 자’가 보내셨다는 것입니다. 다시 말해서, 하나님께서 하나님이 되신 원인은 오직 하나님 당신에게만 있는 것이지, 사람이 신의 존재를 인정해주어서, 사람이 신의 형상을 만들어주어서, 사람이 과학적인 연구로 증명해주어서 존재하게 된 신이 결코 아니라는 말씀이고, 그분이 너를 보낸 것이라는 말씀입니다. 여러분, 당신의 이름을 이처럼 당당한 자기 계시로 선포하실 수 있는 하나님은 유일하신 참 신입니다. 아멘.
When he realizes that he doesn't think he has what it takes to accomplish such an enormous task, he says, "Who am I to be generous?" This means, "How can someone like me, who is already old and weak, do such a great thing?" and "Who will listen to me and follow me?" In other words, he is questioning God. And God's answer to him is, "Remember that he who is himself sent you." What does this mean? It means, my friends, that you have been sent by the One who does not depend on any other being for your existence. In other words, God is not a god who came into existence because you, God, alone, caused him to be a god, or because people acknowledged his existence, or because people made an image of him, or because people proved him through scientific research, but because he sent you. Friends, there is only one true God who can proclaim his name with such bold self-revelation. Amen.
여기 중요한 교훈이 있습니다. 사명 받은 사람은 그 사명을 준 분이 누구냐에 따라서 본인의 지위가 결정된다는 것입니다. 보세요? 그는 이 사명 받기 전에는 도망자에 불과했습니다. 하지만, 지극히 높으신 절대자의 보냄을 받은 후부터는 하나님의 뜻을 이르는 자가 되었다는 것입니다. 그러기에 여러분, 별다른 인생이라도 하나님을 제대로 만나면 큰일을 감당합니다. 하나님을 만나는 것은 너무나 중요합니다. 하나님이 여러분에게 큰일을 하라고 하신다면 제일 먼저 해야 할 일은 하나님을 만나는 것입니다. 왜냐하면, 하나님을 만나면 하나님께서 자신에게 주시는 고유의 사명으로 인하여 진짜 달라지기에 그렇습니다. 우리가 이 자리에 머물기를 원합니다. 이것은 자신의 인생의 방향과 목적을 하나님께서 명하시는 사명 수행 쪽으로 바꾸는 결단입니다. 이것이 없이는 결코 우리 인생에 참된 전성기가 찾아올 수 없습니다. 하나님께서는 오늘도 장망성에 종으로 매여 있는 죄인들의 고통을 아시며 그들을 불쌍히 여기시고 그들을 구원해주고자 원하십니다. 이것을 모른다면, 평생을 ‘미디안에서 양만 치면서’ 살다가 끝납니다.
There is an important lesson here. He was a fugitive before he received this mission, but after he was sent by the Most High Absolute, he became a doer of God's will. So, my friends, if you have the right encounter with God in your life, you can do great things. It's so important to meet God. If God is calling you to do something big, the first thing you need to do is to meet God, because when you meet God, it really makes a difference because of the unique mission that God has for you. He wants you to be here. This is the decision to change the direction and purpose of your life toward fulfilling the mission that God has given you. Without this, there will never be true prime time in our lives. God knows the suffering of sinners who are still enslaved to hopelessness today, and He has pity on them and wants to save them. If we don't know this, we will spend the rest of our lives "shepherding sheep in Midian.
우리에게 당장 필요한 것이 무엇일까요? 하나님을 만나는 것입니다. ‘하나님께서 나를 보내셨다’라는 사실의 상기입니다. 그것이 ‘예수님의 목적’이고 이것이 우리의 인생 수단입니다. 모세의 인생 전성기는 나이 팔십 때입니다. 즉 “나 같은 사람이 이제 무얼 할 수 있을까?”라고 한탄할 수밖에 없던 바로 그 시점부터이었지만, 그가 하나님을 만났습니다. 나이는 숫자에 불과합니다. 부르실 때 찾아가는 것은 너무나 중요합니다. 그리고 말씀대로 순종하는 것은 너무나 중요합니다. 하나님이 지금 여러분을 부르십니다. 부르심에 여러분은 어떤 답을 하시겠습니까? ‘내가 누구 관대’라고 하시겠습니까? 한탄하는 자리에 머물겠습니까? 이제 이 자리에서 일어나 여러분을 부르신 이유를 바로 알아 영적 전성기로 살아가시기를 예수 그리스도 이름으로 축원 드립니다. 기도하겠습니다.
What is our immediate need? It is to encounter God. It is a reminder that "God has sent me." That is the purpose of Jesus, and that is our means of life. The prime of Moses' life was at the age of eighty, which is when he could only lament, "What can a man like me do now?" but then he met God. Age is just a number. It's so important to come when you're called, and it's so important to obey when you're told. God is calling you right now. What will you say to the call? Will you say, "Who am I to be generous?" Will you remain in a place of lamentation? May you rise up from this place and know exactly why you are called and live in your spiritual prime, in the name of Jesus Christ.
